I’m Nahlana.
I help you see through the maze of life, building resilience along the way.

I am an SEP (Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner)  as well as a counsellor  and therapist.  A two time survivor of breast cancer, ADD suffer and recovering from C-PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), I help people of all ages to overcome mental or emotional difficulties.

After more than 20 years in the corporate arena, I decided to become a full time therapist. Having had extensive therapy myself, I discovered Somatic Experiencing®  after several harrowing life experiences in 2012.

A session is more than ‘just talk’, because I will be using Somatic Experiencing ® which will help me to notice the language of your nervous system. These come in the forms of sensations, body language and impulses.

What is Somatic Experiencing®?

Somatic Experiencing® is a therapy based on working with the nervous system. Developed by Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. over the past 50 years; it is a naturalistic and neurobiological approach to healing trauma, chronic stress and pain as well as numerous other mental, emotional and health challenges.

Challenges I Can Help You With By Using Somatic Experiencing®

Depression

Everybody goes through low periods in their life at one time or another.  It is important to be aware of it and to talk to someone especially a mental health professional to help to diagnose your symptoms.   You  don’t need to feel embarrassed about  it.  Medication can help temporarily but it is important to look at other factors such as medical issues that could cause it; i.e. hormones, thyroid, vitamin and mineral deficiency and anything else, so consider having some tests to rule out medical issues.

Long term therapy will help to ‘work through’ emotions that may be difficult to deal with.

Trauma

Trauma means different things to different people.  It is not in the event but the response of your nervous system to the event.  For example, one child falls from his bicycle and scrapes his knee.  His loving parent comforts him and tends to his feelings and applies medication to the knee.

Another child who had the same situation could have had a parent who scolded him;  did not tend to his wound and left him alone.  This would definitely have traumatised the child.  Trauma happens to your body and nervous system, not the mind.

Anxiety

Anxiety  can come in different forms and strike you at any time.  While there is medication and coping skills taught; those just help on the surface.  I have found that anxiety is often related to emotions that have been suppressed or repressed.   Anyone suffering from anxiety should seek the help of a therapist.  If the anxiety is debilitating, then medication maybe needed to function but the goal will be to stop the meds as they get better. https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/anxiety-disorders/what-are-anxiety-disorders https://psychcentral.com/anxiety/getting-to-the-root-of-your-anxiety-how-to-explore-the-causes

Chronic Pain/ Health Issues

Chronic or any kind of pain can be debilitating.  It can also be influenced by psychological and emotional factors.  Health issues may also be caused by unresolved mental and emotional issues.  “What the mind suppresses, the body expresses.”

Career Challenges/ Burn Out

Losing a promotion, not sure where to go in your career, over working, maybe even hating your job but staying there for the money. Having someone to talk and brainstorm about your career can give you a fresh outlook.

Self Growth/ EQ

Self-growth begins with self-awareness but not everyone is conscious of their actions and behaviours.  What areas of your life do you feel unfulfilled in?  Do you feel a lack of purpose?

EQ (Emotional Quotient or Emotional Intelligence) is a measure of a person’s ability to recognise, understand, manage and express their own emotions as well as to perceive and navigate the emotions of others.   It is considered important in personal and professional settings as it can positively impact decision-making, teamwork, leadership and overall well-being.

ADD/ADHD

As someone who has ADD, I understand the immense struggle to stay focused, organised and to control my impulses and regulate my behaviour.   Somatic Experiencing® has helped me in leaps and bounds, especially in regulating my nervous system

Resilience

Resilience is seen as being able to bounce back. However, what many people don’t realise is that, that very person might have deep trauma still embedded in the nervous system. So while they are still functioning; if they have not been to therapy, they are bound to be struggling internally. This can manifest in many ways such as anxiety or panic attacks, also illness which can range from gastritis, backaches, migraines, to insomnia. As the saying goes “What the mind suppresses, the Body expresses”.

In Somatic Experiencing® terms; true resilience is actually the body’s ability to have ‘capacity’. Capacity is the ‘buffer’, that grows as you regulate. Regulation is one of the main tools in Somatic Experiencing® that helps your entire system find peace and balance.

Sessions can be done in person or online.  The first session usually takes around 75 – 90 minutes and there is no charge for the extra time during the first session.  Subsequent sessions are 1 hour.

Online sessions will be via zoom and they can have the same impact as an in-person session.

Life Coaching focuses on goal-setting, accountability, motivation, and developing strategies for success.  It helps individuals set and achieve goals, enhance personal development and make positive changes in their lives.   Sometimes a therapy session can include coaching or vice-versa.

In the role of a coach, I will provide guidance, support, and encouragement, empowering you to unlock your potential and improve various aspects of your life.

Group therapy gives participants a chance to share their experiences, gain insights and receive feedback both from the therapist as well as fellow group members.

It is often a small group addressing their personal challenges in a supportive and confidential group setting.  It also costs less than a one-on-one session and can help those who are on a tight budget.

All my workshops are always experiential and involve processing of thoughts and emotions to lead to integration. Workshops are also woven into Group Therapy and vice versa. Corporations can request for workshops to be curated as part of their training programs.

Some public workshops that have been held in the past are:

  • Self Confidence/Assertiveness
  • New Year New You
  • Anger Management
  • Inner Child Work
  • Grief
